Substitute Teacher Cover Letter Example

A good substitute teacher keeps learning on track when the regular teacher cannot be there, and doing that well takes preparation, flexibility and calm. I am applying for the Substitute Teacher position with Fairview School District because I enjoy stepping into any classroom and making the day count.

With Sunrise School District I teach across grades K-12, covering up to eight classes a week and more than 200 students a year. I have taught from more than 50 lesson plans left by regular teachers, adapting them for students with different needs, and 95% of those teachers have given positive feedback on how I ran their classes. I always leave detailed notes so the regular teacher can pick up exactly where we finished.

At Maplewood Middle School I covered math, science and language arts for grades 6-8, filling in for more than 15 teachers each semester. Setting clear expectations at the start of every class and keeping students engaged reduced disruptions by 30%. I worked with faculty to align my notes with their curriculum goals, so students did not lose ground while their teacher was away. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Portland.
